0.36-mile of TH-22 Under Review

Nicola Shipman

  • There is a 0.36 section of TH-22, locally known as Chapel Hill Road, that is shown on the 2016 VT AOT Highway Map as a “Class III Functioning as a Class IV”. This 0.36 section has long been considered an untraveled Class IV Road, much like the 0.96 section of road that extends from the intersection of Legal Trail 2 and the Norwich town line. The 0.96 section of TH-22 is identified as untraveled Class IV Road on the 2016 VT AOT General Highway Map
  • In 1981, there is evidence of a field classification conducted by a State Engineer during which the 0.36 section of TH-22 was recorded as Class III. It is the Selectboard’s position that this was an error.
  • The Town sought legal guidance and input from the State. The recommendation was that the Town’s best course of action is to formally reclassify the 0.36 section of road from “Class III Functioning as Class IV” back to “Class IV”. The Class IV designation is in keeping with the historic nature of the road and reflects the actual conditions.
  • The Town of Sharon Selectboard has taken formal action to legally reclassify this 0.36-mile section of TH-22
  • On August 1st, 2022, the Selectboard initiated action to formally take action and is considering reclassification of this 0.36-mile section of road. There will be a site visit on Wednesday, September 7th at 5:30PM. The Public Hearing will be held on Monday, September 19th at 6:00PM.
